Double Take

31 August 2005 - 8 October 2005

Venue: Arts Project Australia
Opening: 30 August 2005

Many artists who attend APA's innovative studio program use visual images as a starting point for their own work. To assist in this purpose, APA has a Visual Library of art reference material including many magazines and books that the artists are able to access to provide inspiration for their own creative processes.

The premise for the Double Take exhibition was inspired by one of Lisa Reid's paintings. Lisa browsed APA's Visual Library and chose a postcode replica by Melbourne-based artist Louise Paramor from her FOREVERYOURS series. Although the postcard was a tiny reproduction of a large collage, Lisa chose to paint a large canvas. The way Lisa emphasises the details and elongates the figures is true to her own particular vision. While there is much commonality between the two works, the originality of Lisa's interpretation is striking but this can only be fully appreciated when both works are viewed together.

Double Take has taken this idea a step further by inviting eleven external artists to co-exhibit their work along side the interpretations of these works created by the artists at APA, which images have resulted in a freshness and originality that has become the hallmark of work produced at Arts Project Australia.

Artists who submitted work for interpretation include: Jenny Bell, John Campbell, Robert McHaffie, Simone LeAmon, Amanda Marburg, Louise Paramor, Jim Pavlidis, Geoffrey Ricardo, John Ryrie, Lyndal Walker and Ieuan Weinman.

Artists from APA include: Steven Ajzenberg, Alvaro Alvarez, Alan Constable, Paul Hodges, Wayne Marnell, Julian Martin, Cameron Noble, Jodie Noble, Sam Penn/Ashdown, Lisa Reid and Anthony Romagnano.
