The Grey Voice

23 July 2005 - 13 August 2005

Venue: Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney
Opening: 23 July 2005

Leo Cussen an artist who attends the APA studio was invited to exhibit his pastel drawings to appear in The Grey Voice a group exhibition curated by Jacqueline Rose and Jasmin Stephens.

The Grey Voice reflects on the notion of drawing rather than simply being a collection of drawings. Its title is suggestive of the 'greyness' of dust, ash, smoke, clouds and shadows as well as the ephemeral and elusive qualities of drawing. It avoids the rules of most drawing shows which permit only unique works on paper. The exhibition teases out the relationship between the drawn, the written and the uttered.

Leo Cussen's work is characterised by the concentrated use of pastel, and he often captures movement and humour in his work. The work has an obsessive quality resulting in a repeated use of images and phrases; this is embellished by the intense use of his chosen medium.

Leo has utilised images and text from Hollywood's glamour era. His text-based work uses the power of repetition to embody the larger-than-life spirit of Hollywood, from the time when screen legends such Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers reigned supreme.

Within the context of art such focused obsessions become a positive creative force, bringing pleasure to both artist and viewer alike.
