Interloop

30 January 2006 - 4 March 2006

Venue: Arts Project Australia
Opening: 29 January 2006

Artwork using textile materials has been included as part of the studio program at APA for a substantial period of time. Thread is the new chosen medium for artists Fiona Longhurst and Anne Lynch. Stitch by stitch, textile extensions of their works on paper are created and embellished with the artists' personal aesthetic. Configurations of thread are personified to reveal a striking similarity between the artists' works created with a needle and those on paper.

Fiona's inclinations toward childhood themes poke at innocence, while her vast patterning technique illuminates a patchwork of hypnotic proportions. Bricks of coloured thread are the foundations that house her images. Loops of intrinsic intent become the building blocks of her colourful planes.

Moments in time and those that occupy these are snared by Anne and rendered with the help of a needle and thread. The subject matter is decorated by a diligent hand and suspended with an almost solemn tone. Anne's works become memoirs that summon a sentimental state.

Earlier this year Fiona Longhurst's work on paper was also included in the Artists' Books group exhibition at the APA gallery. This year Anne Lynch's works were also exhibited in two APA group exhibitions, the Sydney Art on Paper Fair and internationally at the Dunedin Public Gallery, New Zealand and the Phyllis Kind Gallery, New York.
