Lapped

3 September 2005 - 23 October 2005

Venue: Campbelltown Arts Centre
Opening: 3 September 2005

Curated by Peter Fay, Lapped explores the dualities of the ocean's edge. Peter Fay enquired about an Artist attending the APA studio; John Bates whose work Untitled (Landscape) 2004, was exhibited in the connected05 exhibition at APA's gallery in May this year. This work has been included in the Lapped exhibition at the new $10 million Campbelltown Arts Centre that was officially opened on 30 June 2005.

Flat planes and brilliant colour characterise the work of John Bates. His strikingly delineated compositions are often based on landscapes, pared back to the barest of essentials, and evoking a silent stillness. Two of John's works are featured in the Home Sweet Home: Works from the Peter Fay Collection - a travelling exhibition of the National Gallery of Australia. John's works have also been included in the Connexions Particulières (Private Connections) and Art des Antipodes (Art of the Antipodes) exhibitions at MADMusée's gallery in Liège, Belgium as well as the permanent collection at Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery.
