Makers Mark

7 September 2006 - 14 October 2006

Venue: Arts Project Australia
Opening: 6 September 2006

Makers Mark is a group show consisting of six painters from APA. The link between these six artists is their unique approach to painting. All have developed, over a long period of time, very distinctive styles that relate to their own sense of mark making. These often include symbols or images that are of great importance to the artist.

Chris Jackson has a long history of recording calendar dates, specific to the day on which he attends APA. In Antonella Calvano's work we see the artists' signature appear numerous times along with details and intricate patterns that represent secrets and jewel-like objects. Kellie Seedsman often fills her canvases with personal drawings of people, animals and shapes often creating a rather autobiographical landscape. Robert Brown produces luminous and complex paintings that ultimately obscure his original drawing of planes and flowers. John Button and Donald Muir by comparison, appear to be involved in the primal act of investigating pure colour and the application of paint.
