Pictures of You

23 July 2009 - 29 August 2009

Venue: Arts Project Australia
Opening: 22 July 2009

Arts Project Australia presents a 'window into the artists' world' in this inspiring exhibition of imaginative portraits. Arts Project Australia presents an inspiring collection of portraits by artists from its studio. In considering all the forms of representational art, Portraiture is the most complex as the artist must reconcile their own interpretation of the subject's vision of themselves and how the subject may wish the world to perceive them.

"The portraits the artists choose to paint and draw tend to give us a window into the artists world…For instance, Adrian Lazzaro's penchant for the 'macabre' and the 'villain', or Steven Worrell's homage to his celluloid heroes…" James McDonald, 2009.

In Pictures of You the Artists of Arts Project Australia not only draws on the time honoured subtleties of portraiture but each bring their own whimsical and idiosyncratic interpretation.

"The artists all approach the portrait with a different idea of what they want to achieve…For example, Cathy Staughton is telling us her personal story, whereas Julian Martin uses the portrait as a starting point and isn't interested in likeness but rather a reductive form that fits his personal, visual aesthetic." Jakob Schmitt, 2009.
