2 x 2 presents two solo exhibitions by Kate Knight and Simon Paredes, each celebrating a devotion to colour, composition, form and design. In Simon Paredes’ Brillo, the application of prism pencil to paper is dense and meticulously applied, the imagery stylised and controlled, underpinned with a distinct quirkiness. In Kaleidoscope, Kate Knight creates explosions of fractured colour, each piece organically constructed and full of movement and energy.
Kate Knight: Kaleidoscope
In this dynamic body of work, bright, multi-colour swatches of irregular shapes fill the plane. The interlocking imagery morphs continuously from organic leaf-like grid lines through to more geometric and obscure shapes, creating a myriad of powerful directional shifts within each piece. The changing pattern of shapes and colours and the intersecting angles and linework results in a mesmerising undulating optical effect.
Kate Knight has worked at the Arts Project Australia studio since 2008. She has been involved in numerous group exhibitions including at Spring 1883; Melbourne Art Fair; Gallery 101, Ontario; and C3 Gallery, Abbotsford. Her work is held in national and international private and corporate collections.
Simon Paredes: Brillo
Brillo brings together two streams of Paredes’ practice; the playful interpretations of pop culture product labelling and the investigation of museological displays of taxidermy birds, each executed with an acute sense of colour and design. The product series balances text and form with wonky charm, while there is a fantastic tension between the simplified animal forms and scientific subject matter in the museological bird images.
Paredes has worked at the Arts Project Australia studio since 2014. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including Wangaratta Art Gallery and Arts Centre Melbourne. His work is held in private collections in Australia.
Join us for an opening celebration Saturday 5 November 2022, 3-5pm at our Collingwood Yards gallery.
