Join us for CHRISES’ MOVIES, a screening and artist talk with Arts Project Australia (APA) artist Chris O’Brien, in conversation with APA staff artist/digital specialist Lesley Pinder.
Chris’ recent body of moving image work is a blend of vaudevillian comedy, satire and mock tragedy, inspired by the artists’ passion for real estate, sitcoms, computer games and reality television. The self-described ‘Boss’, Chris regularly narrates these works, self-reflexively inserting himself into commercials, TV and real-estate marketing videos alongside cameos by APA staff, friends and celebrities. Blending fiction, popular culture, imagination and life stories, Chris’ work straddles the line between staging and improvisation, with a mumblecore sensibility. The artist inserts quirky images and unexpected story lines into popular culture and narratives to effects that are surreal, metaphysical and comical – collapsing fantasy, performance and reality in a wink of the eye, or the creak of a dream home floor.
Chris may or may not be joined by Chris #2, otherwise known as ‘Grumpy Chris’.
“There’s another Chris of me on another planet. A bad one. He doesn’t like me. He’s mean. And there’s another copy of us on this planet. They are probably doing a story about each other too. And talking about this project.” – Chris O’Brien (Chris #1)
Take a seat, munch on some popcorn and contemplate the world through the Chrises’ eyes.
