Flesh After Fifty is an exhibition challenging negative stereotypes of ageing while celebrating positive images of older women through art. Alongside bringing to the fore images that need revisiting or have been overlooked, Flesh After Fifty includes 10 new commissioned art installations that explore social issues, health and empowerment of older women. Amongst these is Catherine Bell’s “The Artist and The Mermaid” (2020), a silent film documenting Cathy Staughton painting a series of nude portraits of Bell while she performs the role of a mermaid that Staughton discovers on the beach. The piece was created during a shared artist residency undertaken by “The Two Cathies” at Venus Bay 2020; the pair have been each other’s muse since 2009 when they met at Arts Project Australia.
