Exhibition | Mayor of the Town: Chris O’Brien

In Mayor of the Town storyteller and multidisciplinary artist Chris O’Brien builds, writes and stitches his own borough, inspired by other people’s stories and houses. Weaving together a collection of three-dimensional narratives, O’Brien places himself and his friends into his own creations, relaying the antics and situations they experience together; spider outbreaks, exploding hot water systems and creaky weatherboard dwellings. Aiming to capture the influence of local suburbia and architecture, Mayor of the Town includes soft sculpture houses, ceramics and drawings, and marks O’Brien’s second solo exhibition at Arts Project Australia.

O’Brien has exhibited in group shows including AIR17, Australian Tapestry Workshop, Melbourne (2017); Victorian Craft Awards 2017, Craft, Melbourne (2017); Small Universe, No Vacancy Gallery, Melbourne (2014); and The Agents, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne (2010).

This show coincides with group exhibition Tethered to the Site: The Archive of Memory.

Both exhibitions will be opened by Victor Griss, Gallery Curator, Counihan Gallery In Brunswick.
