(knowing what it is to be human)
Arts Project Australia returns to Spring1883 for the latest Sydney iteration at the Establishment Hotel. In 2019, Arts Project Australia ventures into the Establishment to present new and thought-provoking artworks by 18 Melbourne-based emerging, mid-career and established artists. Numerous artists are represented in prominent private and public collections in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; National Gallery of Australia; and The Museum of Everything, London.
Room 24 (knowing what it is to be human) speaks to personal themes—very personal in some cases, focusing on aspects of the body in various stages of dress and undress, which are at times are confident and empowering, while other times are profoundly revealing. While thinking about the small, intimate Hotel Room at the Establishment, number 24 on level two, we wanted to create a space that challenges common perceptions about the body: how it’s viewed, how we think about it, who has access to it.
Room 24 presents rousing work by emerging, mid-career and established artists, providing an insight into their diversity of practice. The studio and gallery philosophy underpins our approach: to enable and promote individual artists in the development and expression of their ideas, process and style.
The work of Arts Project studio artists will be exhibiting at SPRING1883 in Sydney from 11-14 September 2019.Showcasing 26 of the best contemporary galleries and spaces from the region and beyond, SPRING1883 occupies the boutique rooms of The Establishment hotel in Sydney, creating a unique hotel-based art fair.
Through its intervention into a hotel’s context, SPRING 1883 sees the traditional art fair model replaced with a boutique site for dialogue and interaction between galleries, artists and collectors. Conceived by galleries for galleries, participation in SPRING1883 is through personal invitation, allowing the project to evolve out of shared conceptual engagements.
