Mark Smith is a multidisciplinary artist who works across painting, ceramics, mixed media, video and soft sculpture. Smith is concerned with human nature and the human condition. In his ceramic work, Smith examines the physicality of the body, using the primitive vessel to explore the truly distinctive characteristics of being human. Smith’s text-based soft sculptures inject emotional responses into selected words. Dynamic and multi-textured, the words represent philosophical propositions that reflect the artist’s state of being. Within this framework, Smith addresses the experiences and complexities of the individual and of humanity.
Smith has worked in the Arts Project studio since 2007 and had his first solo exhibition in 2017. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including Spring 1883, Robin Gibson Gallery, No Vacancy Gallery, c3 Contemporary and The Substation. His work is held in the Monash University Museum of Art and Moreland City Council collections and is held in private collections Australiawide.
