Alan Constable is a multi-disciplinary artist widely known for his ceramic cameras. Legally blind, Constable works closely with referent objects, committing the physical forms of optical objects to memory and then to clay. Pinched, pushed and molded, the hand-built works possess a gestural tactility, shining with lustrous wet-finish glazes. The works reflect a life-long fascination with optical instruments beginning at the age of eight with the artist creating replicas of old cameras from cardboard cereal boxes. Constable’s finger impressions can be seen clearly on the clay surface, leaving the mark of the maker as a lasting imprint. Coinciding with his 3D practice, Constable maintains a strong painting and drawing practice, focusing on imagery from newspapers and magazines as his points of reference.
