Alvaro Alvarez is an established artist whose practice centers on painting and drawing. Within the vibrant fields of compartmentalized color there is often an interesting juxtaposition between the painstakingly deliberate and the ‘chance happening’, while beneath the painted surface graphite sketching - drawn in, rubbed back and drawn in again – acts as a subtle underlay, adding further depth. The fine brushwork and feathery lines have an extraordinary delicacy and a haunting ethereal quality. Alvaro Alvarez has worked in the studio at Arts Project Australia since 2000, and presented his first solo exhibition ‘Alvaro Going Solo’ at Arts Project Australia in 2005. He has been included in numerous group exhibitions including, Melbourne Art Fair, Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne (each year from 2002 – 2012) and Pearls of Arts Project Australia: The Stuart Purves Collection, National touring exhibition (2007-2009). The National Gallery of Australia has also acquired Alvarez’s work.
