Alvaro Alvarez (b 1965, Costa Rica) is an established artist whose practice centres on painting and drawing. Within his vibrant fields of colour there is an interesting juxtaposition between the painstakingly deliberate and the ‘chance happening’. Beneath the painted surface is graphite sketching—drawn in, rubbed back and drawn in again. The feathery lines and brushwork are delicate, eliciting an ethereal quality. Alvarez has worked at Arts Project since 2000 and presented his first solo show in 2005. He has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally and has work in the National Gallery of Australia and National Gallery of Victoria, as well as private collections worldwide.
