Christian Hansen is an Australian artist of Romani heritage whose practice spans drawing, painting, and ceramics, with a particular passion for exploring and experimenting with materials and techniques. His works are rich in symbolism and explore historical, personal, and mythological narratives, focusing on figures and motifs that reflect on heritage, history and identity. Hansen’s recent oil paintings evoke a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere through sophisticated use of colour, shadow, and spatial composition. Whether depicting landscapes or interiors, his scenes are marked by a sense of openness and stillness – expansive spaces that invite contemplation rather than crowd the viewer. Deeply personal and symbolic, these works draw on intimate experiences of family, memory, and loss, with recurring imagery of domestic interiors, waiting rooms, and moments of quiet reflection.
Hansen has worked in the Arts Project studio since 2017. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and is a current member of The Northcote Penguins, an art collective formed in the Professional Practice Program at Arts Project Australia. His work is held in in private collections throughout Australia.
